We are one day away from WrestleMania.
Welcome to the WWE SmackDown! Review: April 4th edition. We are on the cusp of WrestleMania 36, which will air this weekend. This will be the first time that WrestleMania has ever been spread over two days.
But first, we have one final stop on the road to WrestleMania, this weeks episode of Friday Night SmackDown! So, without any further ado, here is what we were to expect of the show, as reported on WWE.com
John Cena to respond to Bray Wyatt’s Firefly Fun House challenge
Last week on SmackDown, Wyatt challenged Cena to a Firefly Fun House match at WrestleMania 36. Would the 16-time World Champion accept this fiendish challenge?
The Uso’s and The New Day to appear on Miz-TV ahead of WrestleMania match
Okay, let’s attempt to get our heads around this one. In my SmackDown review last week, we saw that the main event was a Tag-Team match between The Uso’s and The New Day to determine who will face The Miz and John Morrison to challenge for the Tag-Team Championships at WrestleMania 36. The match ended with disqualification as Miz and Morrison got involved and caused the finish of the match. We were then made aware by Michael Cole that at WrestleMania 36, there will be a Triple-Threat Tag-Team match between The Uso’s, New Day and Miz and Morrison for the Championships. In the past week, there has been a lot of speculation as to whether or not that match will actually go ahead. The Uso’s and The New Day were set to appear on Miz-TV on this week’s SmackDown to give some clarity on the situation.
This is our WWE SmackDown! Review: April 4th edition. Let’s get this ball rolling.
Miz-TV opened up the show
The Uso’s made their way to the ring first, followed by The New Day. Both teams were arguing as to who would be the winner of the WrestleMania match. Both teams continued to argue as to who officially won the match last week after the DQ finish. Miz and Morrison then came out, stating how great they are as champions—The New Day and The Uso’s seemingly forgot their differences and charged up the ramp toward the champions to begin attacking. An Uso inadvertently super-kicked Kofi which led to a brawling battle from Big-E. Miz and Morrison once again got involved from behind and took out both opposition teams. Miz and Morrison were left standing tall one day before WrestleMania. There was no mention of any of the speculation regarding the status of the WrestleMania match, so one can only assume we are still getting this block-buster Triple-Threat Tag-Team match for the WWE Tag-Team Championships.
Naomi vs Lacey Evans vs Tamina
The first official match of the night was a Triple-Threat Match. I considered this as a pre-WrestleMania treat, with Naomi vs Lacey Evans vs Tamina, and the SmackDown Women’s Champion, Bayley and Sasha Banks joining Michael Cole at the announcer’s table for the duration of the match. Naomi and Evans started the match by joining forces to take down the larger opponent, Tamina. The unexpected alliance didn’t seem to do the trick as Tamina soon threw both Superstars outside of the ring with what seemed to be minimal effort. It makes you think, how much of a powerful force is Tamina going to be at WrestleMania, and will we possibly see a 4 on 1 alliance in the Fatal-5-Way match, in order to take out Tamina, as I believe she will be considered the largest threat in the Championship match.
When SmackDown returned from commercial, Tamina was working on the neck of Naomi, I could only assume Evans was still out on the outside of the ring as there was no sign of her, until Evans appeared in the ring with a strong elbow directly to the face of Tamina looking to inflict damage in this match. Tamina didn’t seem shaken whatsoever. Banks jumped up from the announcer’s table and attacked Lacey Evans. This left Tamina in the ring with Naomi, Tamina continued to attack and completely destroy Naomi and picked up the One-Two-Three! Tamina won the match!
After the match, Bayley entered the ring to try to sweeten up Tamina before the WrestleMania match. Tamina responded by kicking Bayley directly in the face! (Wrestlers don’t have great communications skills, do they?). That’s clearly a joke, (please don’t kick me, Tamina). What is not a joke, however, is that the SmackDown Women’s Champion has the card stacked against her at WrestleMania in a Fatal-5-Way match for the Championship (including one opponent, Sasha Banks, who claims to be Bayley’s best friend). Will we see Banks turn on her friend Bayley? Will Bayley retain her Championship? Will we see a new champion crowned? We will find out soon.
Michael Cole delivers breaking news regarding WrestleMania 36
This was regarding the scheduled match between Goldberg and Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship. Roman Reigns will no longer be appearing at WrestleMania due to personal health decisions. Reigns posted a video on his Instagram that you can watch here. The new challenger for Goldberg will be the ‘Monster Among Men’ Braun Strowman.
Backstage promo with Heavy Machinery
Otis was backstage with his Tag-Team partner Tucky, speaking about Mandy Rose, yet again. Tucky told Otis that Mandy asked how Otis was, but also that she was headed to the locker room of Dolph Ziggler aka Lucifer. While having this discussion, Otis received a text message and walked away, appearing excited but without saying anything.
You cant do this to me, Otis. I am so invested in your story-line. Especially one day before WrestleMania!
Tucky (Tucker) vs Dolph Ziggler
Tucky took on Ziggler, looking to get retribution for everything that Ziggler has done to Otis. As the fight commenced, Ziggler seemed to take full control with a chin-lock that kept the 6’5” Tucky grounded. This was only momentary, however, as Tucky knocked Ziggler directly in the face with a jaw-shattering kick, and it now seemed that Tucky could put away the former World Champion, Dolph Ziggler.
This match returned from commercial with the action having moved outside the ring and Tucky in complete control. Tucky slammed Ziggler face-first into the announcer table, followed by driving Ziggler into the barrier. Tucky didn’t stop there, and slammed Ziggler into the steel steps! Tucky then rolled Ziggler back into the ring and continued the damage. The match took a u-turn, however, as Ziggler and Tucky ended up outside the ring again and Ziggler performed his signature, the Zig-Zag on to the steel steps. This match was ended with a disqualification due to weapon use.
Winner: Tucky (via DQ)
Sidebar, I’m sure you are well aware of the glitches that have been appearing on SmackDown for the last month or so. If you are as eagle-eyed as me, you may have noticed that these glitches have only been appearing when Otis or Dolph Ziggler were on screen.
It seemed that the meaning of these glitches were going to be revealed this week on SmackDown as these glitches continued, including the words ‘the truth will be heard’. Now, this is where it gets very interesting. We had our first glimpse as to who is behind all of this, with a hooded figure appearing on the TitanTron and began speaking with an altered, anonymous voice. What’s their agenda? The hooded hacker went on to say that the truth will be heard and began to show some CCTV footage. This footage was from days before Valentine’s day, before the planned date that Otis and Mandy were meant to have. If you missed any of the information regarding the situation involving the date, just check out last weeks review here. (I am very invested in this storyline so I went into a lot of detail!)
The footage shown was Mandy talking in her locker room with her Tag-Team partner, Sonya Deville, about how much she liked Otis, he’s different, but she liked him. A video clip then played of Otis preparing for his date and getting really pumped for it. The video then cut back to Mandy and Sonya’s locker room, and Mandy walks out leaving her phone behind. Sonya picked up Mandy’s phone and it was Sonya that sent the text to Otis! (the text message that Otis received was that Mandy was going to be late, which resulted in Otis, arriving late to accommodate Mandy and unintentionally standing up Mandy Rose). Sonya was then seen deleting the text that she sent from Mandy’s phone, erasing all paper trails. Sonya was also seen speaking privately to Dolph Ziggler, discussing how they were going to humiliate Otis and stop Mandy from seeing Otis. Mandy is now fully aware of the lies and deceit that has been carried out by Sonya and Ziggler. How is this going to affect the Otis vs Dolph match at WrestleMania, will Mandy get involved?
Daniel Bryan vs Shinsuke Nakamura
Daniel Bryan takes on Nakamura one day before he takes on Sami Zayn for the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Zayn was present, joining Michael Cole on the announcer’s table for the duration of this match. Bryan was strong throughout the match, viciously assaulting Nakamura whilst staring at Sami Zayn, sending a message to the champion. Zayn sounded shaken on commentary, refusing to reveal any strategy he may have for his title defence at WrestleMania. Zayn clearly does not want to have this match, repeating that the match shouldn’t be happening. It’s convenient that Bryan is going one on one with Nakamura one day before WrestleMania as it is obvious that Zayn is hoping that this will soften up Bryan and make an easy defeat at WrestleMania.
Nakamura and Bryan both showed how talented they are during this match. Nakamura kept targeting Bryan, looking for the win. Bryan reversed an attack from Nakamura into a half crab submission move, which Nakamura somehow escaped. Bryan started to lay his trademark Yes! kicks into the thighs of Nakamura, which made Zayn audibly nervous. Zayn is a complete coward. Bryan locked in the Yes! lock submission move and was ready to defeat Nakamura until Cesaro interrupted the match and caused a disqualification finish. Zayn, Nakamura and Cesaro brought the attack to Bryan, sending a message to the challenger, one day before the Championship match at WrestleMania.
Winner: Daniel Bryan (Via DQ)
John Cena responds to Bray Wyatt’s challenge
Cena started by addressing the fact that WWE is navigating the uncertainty in the world at the moment by bringing their shows to the performance centre in Florida, in front of no live audience. Ahead of the Firefly Fun House match, Cena went on to express that he does not believe that even Bray Wyatt knows what a Firefly Fun House match is. Cena stated that uncertainty leads to fear, fear leads to panic and finally that panic leads to collapse. The Fiend thrives on uncertainty. John Cena accepted Bray Wyatt’s challenge and vows to ‘squash’ Wyatt, and finish what he started 6 years ago at WrestleMania 30 (where the two first had a match in which Cena defeated Wyatt). Wyatt’s FireFly Fun House pals then began to appear from each corner on the barricades, to threaten Cena. They surrounded Cena, telling him that they would make him play with them forever and then ominously squawking ‘he’s here’. The Fiend appeared on a raised podium above John Cena, glaring through the dimly lit room at the 16-time World Champion. Suddenly the lights cut out and the FireFly Fun House Version of Bray Wyatt appeared right next to John Cena, breathing on Cena’s neck the words, ‘Let Me In..’
We'll see you all at #WrestleMania
