With viewership falling to an all-time low, Big Vinnie Mac did what he always does in this situation. He went to the well of nostalgia one more time. Setting up an episode of RAW that was all about the legends. Ric Flair, Jimmy Hart, Hulk Hogan, Torrie Wilson, Mark Henry, and more were on. Meaning Vincent Kennedy McMahon spent no expense in an attempt to boost flagging ratings. It didn’t really work as the show was its usual blend of pointless nonsense and boring matches. Never one to be deterred. He saved the “best” until last. Goldberg challenging McIntyre.
Drew McIntyre Gets Challenged By a Legend
After Drew McIntyre had successfully retained his title against Keith Lee. (Anyone else remembers when Lee was supposed to be the future of the WWE?) He was interrupted by none other than Bill Goldberg who challenged him to a match at the Royal Rumble. Drew said it would be like fighting his dad. There was some pushing and shoving. McIntyre ended up on the mat. Lo and behold, we now have this match.
Vince McMahon’s Idea?
Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the singular stupidest idea that Vince McMahon has come up with since he tried to convince Stephanie and Hunter to do the incest storyline with him. It is so idiotic that anyone unfortunate enough to have had to sit through it. They will have had their IQ drop a couple of points through no fault of their own. If it was a human being, it would have wear mittens attached to each other by a piece of string and it would spend most of its time licking the windows. If it was a dog, it would be taken out behind the woodshed for being rabid and have a bullet put in its brain.
Why Does Goldberg Want This?
This catastrophe began a few weeks back when Big Bill was on The Bump. What initially seemed like he was calling out Roman Reigns, it quickly degenerated into him calling out anyone he could think of. He mentioned Orton and McIntyre as people he’d like to face. However, it seemed that The Tribal Chief was his main goal. This was all to do with the aborted Wrestlemania 36 match from last year. The two were due to face in a Spear vs. Spear match. Roman didn’t want anything to do with Covid-19. He decided to sensibly put his health and that of his family’s health before wrestling. So he stayed home.
When Roman returned he was this new, bad ass version of himself. The turn has caught fire with fans. Roman had suddenly become the biggest draw in the company. A simple character shift has finally placed him in the position that Vince had wanted him in for the last few years. So, even though Goldberg was shouting his name from the rooftops, there wasn’t a chance in Hell that they were about to job Roman out to a part-timer.
Goldberg’s Other Options
That left three options. Orton, McIntyre, or the possibility that the WWE would leave Goldberg out to pasture where he belonged. Sadly, there would be no such luck with the latter. Orton was an obvious no-go as he is currently in a feud with Bray Wyatt. Or The Fiend. Perhaps it’s Alexa Bliss? I have no idea what is going on there. This leaves poor Drew McIntyre as the sacrificial lamb to Goldberg’s rampant ego. Make no mistake, that’s what Drew is…lamb led to slaughter.
Drew McIntyre is screwed.
There is no way that Drew walks out of the Royal Rumble still as the WWE World Champion. Goldberg will not be staring at the lights. At least, not without outside interference. We are talking about a man who managed to get his ending with The Fiend changed at the last minute. Due to the fact that he was convinced a loss would damage his super-hero image. What super-hero image? A super-hero would have did what was right and took the loss. Not cried like a little baby until Vince caved and gave him what he wanted. Almost killing off the best thing going at the time in one stupid move.
What Goldberg Ultimately Wants
Goldberg’s ego will run riot over this match. His ego is already big enough to fill the Raymond James Stadium as it is. This will not end well for McIntyre. He will demand the belt, so they can set up a Champion vs. Champion match. Goldberg wants it between himself and Reigns at Wrestlemania 37. Which, I fully expect Goldberg to try and convince the company to have him go over in.
This is the horrible reality we have to face. NONE of it is Drew McIntyre’s fault. He is in the unenviable position of having zero legitimate threats to his title reign. The company has cooled on Keith Lee for some reason. As I’ve said before, there is nobody else being groomed for the top spot. Drew also happens to be champion during a time when WWE Creative on RAW is an utter mess. This is because Vince has decided to put the future of the show in one of his best friends, Bruce Pritchard’s pointless hands. The business has dropped off. Considering how much money WWE was paid to jump to FOX, Vince has hit the panic button. He decided that Drew doesn’t bring enough fans to the show and it’s time to dish out some more of that sweet nostalgia, pal.
Main Event Ego
Hence the return that nobody wanted. Bill Goldberg will not allow himself to be anything other than main event material. Unfortunately for Drew, he’s the one that’s going to be in the firing line. Goldberg has no right being in the same ring as the current champion. Let alone to emerge victorious from the battle. But it is going to happen and it will spell the end for McIntyre’s push. A push that was well deserved and pretty damn good even with the situation we all currently find ourselves in.
If Bill Goldberg doesn’t walk away with the win at the Royal Rumble then I will happily write a full retraction of this article. I will praise him as a genius that always does what’s best for the business. However, we all know how this is going to go. The bell rings. Drew rushes in an attempt to hit a Claymore but misses. Seeing an opening, Goldberg connects with a Spear which is followed by a Jackhammer and within three minutes we’ll have 1-2-3. “And your new WWE World Champion…GOLDBERG!”
Mark my words.
