Amber McCrudden brings you Stardom: Revisited, a look at three matches from the Stardom archives that have either been forgotten, underappreciated or contain huge stars of the Joshi scene. First up: Mayu Iwatani…

This week’s matches focus on Mayu Iwatani, who is a multi-champion in many promotions, notably holding the Women of Honor Championship for 55 days (losing it to Kelly Kline at the G1 Supercard in Madison Square Garden), and the leader of the unit known as STARS.

Stardom Mayu Iwatani
Kairi Hojo [Sane], Mayu Iwatani & Io Shirai

SIX-WOMAN TAG-TEAM MATCH: Koguma, Kairi Hojo [Sane] & Nanae Takahashi vs. Mayu Iwatani, Io Shirai & Yoshiko

Date: 17th August 2014

Place: Sendi, Japan

Review: This is a fantastic tag team match, where we get to see three of the most talked-about Joshi wrestlers in the world compete in a STARDOM Ring. They are all young and fresh-faced, all in their late teens and early 20s, and would not hit a main stage for a few more years yet, even though they are all fast, skilled and full of charisma and passion.

Of course, I am talking about Kairi Hojo [Sane], who went on to WWE, Io Shirai, who has just returned to NXT after a short break, and Mayu Iwatani, who has spent time in Ring of Honor and is considered one of the best wrestlers STARDOM currently has.

This match is hard-hitting and quick, and definitely a must-watch if you are just getting started with STARDOM or want to explore the careers of Hojo, Shirai and Iwatani. Everyone’s personalities are on show here and their fighting spirit and resilience can also be seen.

Another standout of the match is Nanae Takahashi, who is one of the three founders of STARDOM, while also later founding SEAdLINNNG. She really did help pave the way for the three women who would become the cornerstones of Joshi Puroresu for years to come.

STARDOM DREAMSLAM 2018 TAG-TEAM MATCH: Mayu Iwatani & Tam Nakano vs. Xia Brookside & Toni Storm

Date: 31st March 2018

Place: Osaka, Japan

Review: While this match is a little messy in places, we get to see why Toni Storm gained the reputation she has as one of the best athletes from the British Wrestling scene. Tam Nakano might look cute and unassuming, but she has a mean kick and forearm that rocks Storm to her core. Xia Brookside is noticeably young, being only 19 at the time, and seems to be the most inexperienced of the women, but that doesn’t mean you should be sleeping on her; this match will give her valuable experience for the future.

Mayu Iwatani, as one of the pillars of STARDOM, is here in full force, looking even better than in the previous match. With four years’ worth of experience under her belt and a host of championship reigns, Iwatani focuses on her opponents, helping guide and mould them during the match. There is no one better to be an ambassador for STARDOM than Iwatani.

Stardom Mayu Iwatani

Date: 15th May 2016

Place: Korakuen Hall., Tokyo, Japan

Review: This match features two of the best in the world fighting for the top prize in STARDOM, the World of STARDOM Championship, which is the red belt if you are new to STARDOM. This is fan-favourite Mayu Iwatani facing off against the ACE of the company, Io Shirai, in a thrilling bout that needs to be seen to be believed.

It’s hard-hitting, exciting and full of aerial acrobatics that will keep any fan of Pro Wrestling gripped from start to finish. The way these women take it to each other is something to behold and considering the two are friends inside and outside the ring, it just shows how illustrious the Red Belt truly is. I could honestly watch these two women fight all day. This isn’t their first match against each other, but it most certainly is one of their best.

So please go check out this match and fall in love with STARDOM and Joshi Puroresu.
