Josh Alexander: The Rise of The Walking Weapon

After signing for Impact Wrestling in 2018, Josh Alexander made an immediate IMPACT, dominating the tag team division, followed by the X division and now on Saturday 23 October at Bound For Glory he will be taking part in the biggest match of his career as he faces Christian Cage for the IMPACT World Championship. In this article we will be taking a look at the Walking Weapons rise to the main event scene in Impact Wrestling.

Josh Alexander as Destiny Wrestling champion

Alexander played a huge part in re-igniting the Canadian Independent wrestling scene after coming up against a big obstacle in the form of immigration at the Canada-US border, he worked and worked to prove to the world that Canadian wrestling has some of the best unsung talent of any independent scene in the world. Thanks to a working relationship with Impact Wrestling and Destiny Wrestling more and more people were realising just that, as well as realising that Josh Alexander was one of the biggest and hottest free agents in wrestling at the time. Impact executive and fellow Canadian Scott D’Amore was one of those many people to realise that Josh Alexander should be seen by the world on a big stage. Alexander was offered a three year deal with Impact Wrestling in 2018 live in the ring after a Destiny Wrestling event, he would jump straight in to a coveted spot on the Impact roster and would reform his partnership with good friend Ethan Page.

Josh Alexander Ethan Page as Impact tag champions

The former Monster Mafia now renamed and repackaged as The North, set out on a dominant run taking it to every team that Impact management would throw at them. They soon caught the attention of the then Impact Tag Team champions LAX (Santana & Ortiz) and earned a title opportunity against the champions the night before SLAMMIVERSARY 2019 at the Impact plus special Bash at The Brewery, Page and Alexander would shock the world and defeat LAX to become the new Impact tag champions one night before a major pay-per-view. From then on The North would go on to become the longest reigning tag team champions in Impact history, defeating the likes of The Rascalz, Willie Mack and Rich Swann and Ken Shamrock and Sami Callihan. They would eventually lose the tag team titles to the returning Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) on the July 21 episode of Impact. The North would regain the titles one last time at Bound for Glory 2020 before losing them a few weeks later at Turning Point to the Good Brothers (Karl Anderson, DOC Gallows), that would be all she wrote for the team of Page and Alexander. Ethan Page would leave the promotion after Hard To Kill in January 2021.

Walking Weapon in the last minutes of an ironman match vs tjp

The exit of Page left many questioning what would be next for the Walking Weapon? He would answer that question by setting his sights firmly on one of the biggest prizes and a staple of Impact Wrestling since day one. The X Division championship, a championship that many had spoke about being the perfect way to kick off the dominant singles run that everyone knew Alexander was destined for in Impact Wrestling. For the Walking Weapon his road to Bound For Glory would begin at No Surrender, after being the last competitor left standing in a number one contender Triple Threat Revolver match he would set his sights on Rebellion X Division championship triple threat vs TJP and Ace Austin which he would dominate and become the new X Division championship.

Josh Alexander retaining his X Division championship

As X champion Alexander would go on to have what many called the best reign in the history of the X Division, it would be hard to disagree with that statement after his multiple defences against Jake Something, EL Phantasmo, Chris Sabin and of course the sixty minute ironman match against TJP. It would be the match against Sabin at Victory Road that would be the encouragement Alexander needed, because later that night after the current World champion Christian Cage dispatched another high quality contender in Ace Austin, Josh Alexander would say the five words every Impact fan wanted to hear “ Bound for Glory, Option C”. Signalling his intention to the World champion Christian Cage and the wrestling world that he is jumping the line and relinquishing the X division title in exchange for a one on one opportunity for the Impact World championship, which was accepted and the match is taking place this Saturday October 23 at Bound for Glory.

To many this will be the match where the Impact Wrestling World championship comes back home, but for the fans and believers in the Walking Weapon Josh Alexander October 23 will be the night where he shows the world that Josh Alexander is the best wrestler in the world, a statement that the Impact faithful has made since his appearances on Impact One Night Only Pay-Per-Views. A man who has overcome some of the biggest obstacles anyone can face, from two broken neck surgeries and clawing his way back, working a full time job on top of being one of the best performers in the world, there’s not many people who can claim that Bound for Glory was their night but Josh Alexander can, in front of a sold out crowd at Bound For Glory, the Walking Weapon becomes the Walking World Champion.
