NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver Predictions

Predictions for Night One AND Night Two

The time is finally here! We have reached day one of NXT Takeover: Stand and Deliver and the Sports Obsessive staff has you covered with our best guesses on the outcomes of each match. Jon Shartzer, Justin Shartzer and Chris Flackett took a swing at each contest for both nights of the two-night event. Take a gander at our predictions and let us know what you think in the comments or on Twitter!

Triple Threat for the Vacant NXT Tag Team Titles

MSK vs. The Grizzled Young Veterans vs. Legado del Fantasma

Jon: I hate to see titles vacated due to injury. However, that’s one of the unfortunate realities of professional wrestling. With Danny Burch being sidelined, he and Oney Lorcan were forced to relinquish their NXT Tag Team Championships. Their loss is about to be somebody’s enormous gain. But who? I’m torn between MSK and The Grizzled Young Veterans. No offense to Wilde and Mendoza, but they’re just here to add some more fuel to the fire. This will be a fun match that will probably feature a lot of false finishes/breakups. When the smoke clears, I see the newcomers, MSK, walking away with the straps.

Prediction: MSK

Justin: This match has everything that you could ask for in a triple threat match. You have high flyers, hard hitters, and most importantly REAL tag teams. All three teams have plenty of momentum behind them right now. None more, however, than MSK. The former Rascalz have been on a tear since making their debut in NXT and there’s no reason to believe that won’t continue and lead to them winning their first NXT Tag Team Titles.

Prediction: MSK

Chris: As I’m British, I feel like I have to pick the Veterans (shoes off if you hate Gibson!) However, if I’m being realistic, I believe the company is fully behind MSK and they’ll be the ones taking the gold on the night.

Prediction: MSK

Gauntlet Eliminator for an NXT North American Title Shot

Leon Ruff (1st Entrant) vs. Isaiah “Swerve” Scott (2nd Entrant) vs. Bronson Reed (3rd Entry) vs. Cameron Grimes (4th Entrant) vs. Dexter Lumis (5th Entrant) vs. LA Knight (Final Entrant)

Winner challenges NXT North American Champion Johnny Gargano on Night Two.

Jon: When this match was first announced, I knew for sure that Pete Dunne would win and go on to face Gargano, based on Dunne’s talk of being the best technical wrestler. However, he never ever made it to this match and I was forced to totally reconsider. LA Knight seems like the logical choice, due to being the hot new star and winning the battle royal to determine the entry order for this match. The other leading candidate would be Dexter Lumis, who had had an ongoing feud with Gargano and The Way. It’s kind of weird to match up Knight and Johnny Wrestling since both are heels, forcing the fans to cheer for one over the other. I actually think that Cameron Grimes would create the best match, but again, he’s a heel. Therefore, I’m going with Lumis to bring an end to their rivalry on night two.

Prediction: Dexter Lumis

Justin: Going into this past episode of NXT, I was convinced that Pete Dunne was going to win this match and go on to face Johnny Gargano on Night Two. That clearly isn’t going to happen but I don’t think that it’s necessarily a bad thing. This match gives us a chance to see a pretty diverse group of wrestlers and styles that should make for an interesting battle. I’ve been going back and forth on this one but I think I’m going to go with the red hot LA Knight. Knight just brings so much personality and experience and I believe he matches up the best with Gargano, which is really where the payoff comes in with this one.

Prediction: LA Knight

Chris: The company seems to be pretty much behind LA Knight (YE-AH!) and some fresh blood going after the North American title will do that scene good. So I’m picking the artist formerly known as Eli Drake to take the win here.

Prediction: LA Knight

Pete Dunne vs. Kushida

Jon: This is the reason that we’re not getting The Bruiserweight vs Johnny Wrestling…and I am 100% ok with that. Dunne and Kushida have been at each other’s throats the last couple of weeks, most recently being eliminated together during the battle royal and having to be separated afterward. That all leads us to this contest between two of NXT’s best pure wrestlers. After recently coming out of each of their respective title feuds unsuccessfully, both could use a strong showing here to get back into the swing of things. In my opinion, the winner doesn’t matter so much if both men come out looking impressive. But somebody has to win and my gut feeling is that someone is the former NXT UK Champion, Pete Dunne.

Prediction: Pete Dunne

Justin: As I mentioned earlier, I really thought that Dunne was going to win the Gauntlet Match and go on to face Gargano on night two. But I’m not at all disappointed with this match up. In fact, this could also be another potential Match of the Night candidate. We have two men who are excellent technical wrestlers, but also the speed and explosion of Kushida bring another element to this match than say the one Dunne had against Finn Balor at the last TakeOver event. I’m interested to see how they play the potentially injured arm into this match as some sort of advantage for Kushida. That being said, he’s not beating Pete Dunne. Not right now. Even though Dunne lost an excellent match to Balor for the NXT Title, he’s never looked stronger. I see him staying around the top of the card for a while and continuing to be booked strongly. However, both men will greatly benefit from each other in this match.

Prediction: Pete Dunne

Chris: This will be a close call, as both men are in prime condition and at prime quality in their wrestling, but I do believe Dunne will have that little bit more of an edge and that will push him over the line to victory.

Prediction: Pete Dunne

NXT UK Title Match

Tommaso Ciampa vs. WALTER (c)

Jon: WALTER, the reigning NXT UK Champion, has pretty much bulldozed through competition across the pond and proven his dominance over the NXT UK brand. That means it’s time to expand his horizons a little bit and take on a challenge from NXT’s gatekeeper of sorts, Tomasso Ciampa. Both of the guys are two of my favorite competitors and compete, they will. This should be the hardest hitting match of the night, if not the whole week. It certainly would be interesting to see the Blackheart walk out with the WWE United Kingdom Championship, but what’s the play after that? Sure, he only has to film once a month for NXT UK. But he also deserves to stay on television. This gives me a little bit of reservation. But, with that said, I’m calling Tomasso Ciampa with the upset(?). The follow up could be game-changing.

Prediction: Tomasso Ciampa

Justin: This bout has Match of the Night written all over it. These are two men who know how to tell an incredible story in the ring. It will be brutal but it will also be beautiful. That being said, WALTER is so dominant right now and I don’t see that changing any time soon. Also, traveling back and forth to the UK doesn’t seem very likely for Ciampa at the moment. Look for WALTER to leave the arena the same way he came in, as NXT UK Champion.

Prediction: WALTER

Chris: This time, I don’t care about bias. WALTER all day every day for me. I believe him to be the best big man currently in the business and, logistically, it wouldn’t make sense for Ciampa to win the UK title anyway. I can’t see him moving to the UK to defend it, can you?

Prediction: WALTER

NXT Women’s Title Match

Raquel Gonzalez vs. Io Shirai (c)

Jon: Io Shairai has been one of the most dominant champions that NXT has ever seen, male or female. She has held the NXT Women’s Championship for over 300 days. Every time that it’s looked like she was going to drop the title, she finds a way to retain. That’s why I’m so skeptical about making this pick. However, with that said, it feels like Raquel Gonzalez has been groomed for this moment since at least TakeOver: War Games last fall, where she pinned the champion to win the match for her team. She also was given the responsibility of destroying Rhea Ripley upon her exit to the main roster. For those reasons, it feels like it’s Raquel’s time. I look for her to become the new NXT Women’s Champion.

Prediction: Raquel Gonzalez

Justin: Io has had a pretty good run as NXT Women’s champion. She’s going on almost a year now and she’s looked great during that run. But that run comes to an end at TakeOver. I believe Raquel González is being set up for a dominant reign similar to Shayna Baszler or Asuka. Or at least until Shotzi Blackheart comes calling…

Winner: Raquel González

Chris: I might be being naïve, just because I’m a big Io fan, but I’m predicting she walks away with the title here. I certainly don’t want to see her drop the gold just yet.

Prediction: Io Sharai

Ladder Match for Cruiserweight Title Unification

NXT Cruiserweight Champion Jordan Devlin vs. NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar

Jon: This match will probably open the show on night two and for a good reason. This is the perfect match to get the crowd hot for the rest of the show. Both of these competitors have a legit claim to the cruiserweight throne. Unfortunately for them, there can only be one true king. I’ve been struggling with this one. My gut says that Escobar has bigger things in store for him. Maybe that means that it’s time for him to drop the belt and move on. If that’s true, then this one goes to Devlin. He could finally get the run that he deserves in the States.

Prediction: Jordan Devlin

Justin: This is another match that we knew would happen eventually. And I’m all the way here for it. And let’s be honest, there’s really only one memorable way to unify a title. Both of these men are excellent wrestlers and adding ladders into the mix will only make this match that much more exciting. Jordan Devlin is an amazing wrestler, one of the best cruiserweights in the world. But this division is all about Santos Escobar right now. The man oozes charisma and is red hot. Plus, he’s stateside. And let’s face it, that’s what really matters right now during this pandemic. Devlin should get another shot down the road when traveling is a little easier, but right now the title stays on this side of the pond with Escobar.

Prediction: Santos Escobar

Chris: I haven’t got the most positive attitude to Jordan Devlin after the events of last summer, so I would like Santos to win. Something tells me that WWE is going to give Devlin the nod here though, so sadly my prediction lies with Devlin.

Prediction: Jordan Devlin

NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles Match

The Way vs. Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart (c)

Jon: Can we please insert Candice into the NXT Women’s Championship picture? No offense to Indi Hartwell, but being in a tag team is holding LeRae back. There’s no way that they are going to take the belts off of Moon and Blackheart this soon. This feels like the easiest match to predict. Shotzi and Ember retain, hopefully leading to a Poison Pixie singles run at the women’s championship.

Prediction: Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart

Justin: Justin: The NXT Women’s Tag Team title has a long and storied history that goes back almost a whole month. It has already changed hands once before on the same night that the belts were introduced. All of the women in this match are immensely talented and are sure to put on a great performance. Shotzi Blackheart is a bonafide star who is destined to do big things in NXT. And that’s exactly why I think The Way comes away with the victory in this match. I’m sure there will be some underhanded tricks or possibly some interference from either Johnny Gargano or Austin Theory. But I fully expect for us to see new NXT Women’s Tag champions that night and for Shotzi to start setting her sights on something a little…bigger. That being Raquel Gonzalez and the NXT Women’s Championship.

Prediction: The Way

Chris: How can I go against a team that has a woman in it that drives a tank? Seriously, though, The Way, as good as they are, do not seem strong enough to defeat the champs just yet. Shotzi and Ember will go over here, I think.

Prediction: Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon

NXT North American Title Match

Gauntlet Eliminator winner vs. Johnny Gargano (c)

Jon: If my night one prediction of Dexter Lumis winning the gauntlet eliminator match comes true, then that leads up the conclusion of this lengthy feud between Lumis and Gargano. The different styles between these two should mix to make a very interesting matchup. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lumis win here, but then what? It’s hard to have a champion who doesn’t speak or have somebody to do the talking for him. For that reason, I’m going with Johnny TakeOver to retain his North American Championship.

Prediction: Johnny Gargano

Justin: If my Night One predictions are correct then this match will feature Johnny Gargano facing off against newcomer, LA Knight. This will be a fun match between two men with lots of charisma and talent. The trash talk will be next level and the wrestling should be even better. It is physically impossible for Johnny Gargano to put on a bad match. He’s Johnny TakeOver for a reason, even if his record doesn’t reflect that. But it will this time. Johnny keeps the title and Knight will continue to wait for his turn, which I do think will happen eventually.

Prediction: Johnny Gargano

Chris: If LA Knight does indeed win his first match, I think there’s every chance he could beat Gargano here and the company pushes him fast and hard as a champion. It would certainly make the North American title scene fresher. Knight for the surprise win here.

Prediction: LA Knight

Unsanctioned Match: No Rules, No Liability

Adam Cole vs. Kyle O’Reilly

Jon: On the most loaded NXT TakeOver of all time, this is the match that I think has the biggest chance to steal the show. The history between Adam Cole and Kyle O’Reilly is well documented and their chemistry is off the charts. If this unsanctioned match comes anywhere close to being as good as the one between Tomasso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano’s from TakeOver: New Orleans, then we have another instant classic on our hands. The crazy thing is that I think they may even be able to top that match. It really has the potential to be that great. The way I see it, a Cole loss doesn’t hurt him as badly as an O’Reilly defeat, especially coming off two straight losses to NXT Champion, Finn Balor. Kyle O”Reilly finally gets his big signature win.

Prediction: Kyle O’Reilly

Justin: Did someone say “swan song?” No? Not out loud anyway. But this definitely gives me the feeling that this is Adam Coles last match in NXT. It’s going to be an all-out war filled with emotion, brutality, and excellent wrestling. I would have loved to see it play out a little longer to reach the level of Ciampa/Gargano as far as feuds go. But nonetheless, it has been done well and will end even better. Cole will put O’Reilly over and then be on his way to the main roster. Sidenote—this is my pick for match of the night for Night Two.

Prediction: Kyle O’Reilly

Chris: It’s a curious one, this. I would expect the face to get satisfaction but I’m not sure that will be the case here. Adam Cole has always been pushed as the real star of the UE. Do we believe O’Reilly will win here? Unless Cole is about to go to the main roster, I’m picking him for the win.

Prediction: Adam Cole

NXT Title Match

Karrion Kross vs. Finn Balor

Jon: As everybody knows, Karrion Kross never lost his NXT Championship. Finn Balor has been holding it down ever since he won the title following Kross’s shoulder injury that forced him to relinquish the strap. We’ve waited a while for these two to cross paths and now we’re finally here. This is another interesting clash of styles that will make for a very intriguing battle. One thing that we do know is that we will witness an all-out war. As much as I hate that the man formerly known as Killer Kross didn’t get a lengthy title reign, I feel like his days in NXT are numbered. I fully expect to see him and Scarlett on RAW or SmackDown in the near future. Balor retains and continues his impressive run as NXT Champion.

Prediction: Finn Balor

Justin: This match has been a long time coming. Ever since Karrion Kross separated his shoulder while WINNING the NXT Title last August, you just knew he would get his shot to reclaim it whenever he returned. I think they’ve done a great job at setting this match up. Finn Balor has been everything that you could ask for since his return to NXT, including being a great champion. However, that reign ends when he steps in the ring with Kross. It’s Kross’ time to shine and a win against one of the greatest talents that NXT has ever seen is the perfect way to start him off for his first real run with the belt.

Prediction: Karrion Kross

Chris: This is a difficult one to call. Kross, of course, injured himself in the match where he won the title and subsequently had to vacate the strap. Balor has carried the title since and has done a sterling job of representing the promotion. Whilst I think the company will want to put the gold on Kross again eventually, I don’t think they’ll do it just yet, not whilst Balor is doing so well. Balor for the win here.

Prediction: Finn Balor
