Welcome to Sports Obsessive. I have a question for you right off the bat. Ask yourself, did you take live audiences for granted prior to Covid? With the benefit of hindsight, I know I did. The roar of the crowd really adds to everything when it comes to pro-wrestling. The energy of the crowd can add colour and even elements of warmth to certain promos from certain wrestlers and can accentuate that ‘big fight feel’ during some of pro wrestling’s most intense storylines. As of right now, Impact Wrestling, AEW, and WWE are set to hit the road over the next few months. WWE has even announced an international tour, as they plan to visit the United Kingdom in late 2021. I’m sure I speak for us all when I say that I cant wait for all of us to be allowed to safely and responsibly attend live wrestling events in our towns and cities.
In anticipation of the return of live events, I will be taking a look at some WWE Superstars who may face the loudest reactions of the night, as soon as they reunite with the WWE Universe.
There has been some hate online regarding Alexa Bliss’s new character. There’s always going to be hate, but where there’s hate, there’s also appreciation. Nobody can deny that Alexa Bliss is one of the world’s greatest pro-wrestlers. I personally feel that it’s only a matter of time before Bliss leaves the squared circle to pursue a career in Hollywood. Lexi Kaufmann will be a high-profile actress.
Bliss has transformed into a demonic counterpart to Bray Wyatt’s ‘Fiend’. With Wyatt recently taking some time off, Bliss has single-handedly kept this storyline and character alive. Granted, there have been some questionable moments throughout, but Bliss knocks it out of the park each and every time. The Demonic Alexa Bliss and possessed doll, Lilly, are going to steal the show once WWE hits the road once again.
Edge shocked the world when he made his in-ring return at the 2020 Royal Rumble. Luckily for Edge, since this was one of the last WWE PPV’s in which fans were in attendance, Edge got his much-deserved pop. Since then, we have seen the Edge character evolve even more. We have seen Edge partake in some incredible matches with the likes of Randy Orton and Roman Reigns. Currently, Edge has recently returned to SmackDown and has his eyes set on Roman Reigns and the Universal Championship.
Do I want to see Edge hold the company’s top prize once again? Of course I do, but I don’t want to see it in an empty arena or in the WWE Thunderdome. I want to see Edge reach the top of the mountain once again with hundreds of thousands of ‘Edge-Heads’ chanting him on every step of the way.
This one is a shot in the dark. Could we see Becky Lynch return to WWE? The last time that we saw ‘The Man’ was on the episode on Monday Night Raw after the Money In The Bank PPV. Lynch announced that she would be leaving the company as she and her now-husband, Seth Rollins, were expecting. Lynch has since given birth and tied the knot. There have been a couple of Instagram posts that imply that Lynch is already ring-ready once again.
Rhea Ripley is currently the WWE Raw Women’s Champion and I’m sure that Becky Lynch would love to go toe to toe with the Australian in attempts to regain the Championship that she never lost. Lynch walked away at what may have been the peak of her career. I for one would be bouncing off the walls if I was at a WWE live event and Becky Lynch’s music hit. I’m ready for this.
Talk about a character reformation. Roman Reigns was set to participate at WrestleMania 36 but chose to step away from the WWE due to personal reasons. Fast-forward to SummerSlam 2020; there was a WWE Universal Championship match between Braun Strowman and The Fiend. Once the match ended, Reigns made his return to the company as it was heavily implied that this was not the same Roman Reigns that we had on the roster a number of months prior.
Reigns aligned himself with Paul Heyman and established himself as the company’s top heel. It has been 10 months since Reigns has been on this rampage and there are no signs of stopping. Reigns has named himself ‘the head of the table’ and demands to be acknowledged. I find it very hard to believe that Roman will be booed when fans return to live events. Perhaps Reigns is now one of the wrestlers that you love to hate.
Here is a professional wrestler that Vince McMahon would have to throw a lot of money at in hopes of an in-ring return. Lesnar is not currently under contract with the WWE but has been very loyal to the company for an extended period of time. I couldn’t see Brock Lesnar turning up at All Elite Wrestling. I’m almost certain that Lesnar will make a WWE return, it’s just a matter of when. The storyline would have to be perfect for ‘The Beast’ to feel that it’s worth his time. How about a feud with the current WWE Champion, Bobby Lashley?
Lashley has been chomping at the bit for a match with Brock for years. Who better to shut up the leader of The Hurt Business? I guarantee that this would blow the roof off any arena. Brock Lesnar is a marquee name and Vince McMahon has the thickest wallet in all the land. This would light up an arena full of fans. To take a page from Paul Heymans book, “this is not a prediction, this is a spoiler”. Speaking of Heyman, what if Lesnar returned to confront the aforementioned Roman Reigns? Who would Heyman side with?
That concept is interesting in and of itself.
There you have it; this is my take. What is yours? Are the any other WWE Superstars that you feel that would have the WWE Universe on their side once the company hits the road again? I’m sure that Big-E is an honourable mention, as well as The Usos. Let me know what you think!
