Darby Allin Has A Love/Hate Relationship With Indie Promotions

Darby Allin is one of AEW‘s breakout stars.

In his time with the company he’s put in stellar performance after stellar performance and turned even the wariest of fans, myself included, into a believer and like so many on their roster, he cut his teeth on the Independent scene.

A scene, it has to be said, that isn’t always run by the most trustworthy of people.

During an interview with Jim Varsallone, Allin described his time working for some of these promotions;

The Indies, it’s a love-hate relationship. I hate it when people expect you to kill yourself. Like, go out there, beat the hell out of your body and they didn’t want to pay you what you deserve for what you put your body through. They just want to use you as a crash test dummy to get views on their Twitter. That drove me up the wall. I’d get to the building and promoters were like, ‘We’re gonna have you get thrown off this tonight.’ Why are you telling me this? You don’t dictate what I do. I had a lot of bad experiences with brutally horrible promoters. But there were promotions, like Ronin for example, that were good.”

It’s a sad state of affairs, but some promoters are still carny’s at heart and will push any performer they ‘allow’ to work their shows to risk life and limb for little to no pay.

It’s a disgrace, but you can guarantee that Darby Allin isn’t the first and won’t be the last to have these feelings.
