Cody Rhodes Confirms Contract Status

Cody Rhodes contract has been quite the hot topic of late after Fightful reported that he was working in AEW without one. It seemed insane that the company would let one of their top talents – and one of the major cogs in their wheel behind the scenes – run his contract down without renewing it, but according to Cody Rhodes, that’s what happened.

Speaking last night after his brilliant Ladder Match with Sammy Guevara for the TNT Championship, Cody Rhodes said;

There’s so many elephants in the room. This is an insane week in wrestling. People think the Sean Ross story is BS. No, it’s not. I’m working here without a contract. I’m not even on payroll anymore. I’m working here on a handshake deal, that is 100% legitimate.

But I can tell you this, I’ve never felt more at home than under those lights, wrestling for the TNT Title, a title that will never, ever be secondary because of matches like that.”

This strikes me as either a very bold move on AEW’s part – based on mutual trust between the company and Cody Rhodes – or just pure stupidity and they need to get him a new contract as soon as possible. I’m nearly 100% convinced that after everything that Rhodes and AEW have been through together from the launch of the company to this very point there is little to no chance that he’d seek out pastures new, but this is wrestling, folks, and never say never.

Is it really that much of a stretch of the imagination to think that if another company drove a dump truckload of money to his house and promised him total creative control over his character, we wouldn’t see Cody Rhodes rock upon somewhere else with a shiny new contract in hand? At the end of the day, this is a business, and no one thought Brian Pillman would leave WCW for the WWE, now did they.
