Blackjack Lanza Has Passed Away At The Age Of 86

Blackjack Lanza has passed away at the age of 86, and the wrestling world has come out in force to pay tribute to one of the hardest hitting, hardest working, and most respected S.O.B.’s to ever grace a wrestling ring.

Blackjack Lanza – real name, John Mortl Lanzo – wrestled across nearly every territory from the early 1960s to the mid-1980s and held numerous tag-team titles, alongside his friend and tag partner, Blackjack Mulligan, as – surprisingly enough – The Blackjacks. After he retired from in-ring action, he became an agent for the WWE as a road agent and producer and was inducted into both the WWE Hall of Fame and the Professional Wrestling Hall Of Fame. His passing has seen tributes flood in from every corner of the wrestling business. Both Vince McMahon and Triple H have led the tributes.

Vince McMahon said;

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Jack Lanza. He was a man’s man, respected and beloved by all. He worked for and loved WWE for many years. His loyalty and dedication will never be forgotten.”

While Triple H tweeted;

Certain talent will seek certain agents for advice, but EVERYONE sought out Lanza’s. The sweetest man but incredibly tough & 100% dedicated to making us better. Jack often didn’t tell you what you wanted to hear, but ALWAYS told you what you needed. I’ll miss you dearly my friend.”

But it wasn’t just those still involved with the WWE that paid their respects, as The Iron Sheik paid tribute to his friend by saying;

BLACKJACK LANZA BUBBA YOU WERE THE TOUGHEST BUBBA. I MISS YOU FOREVER.”

And The NWA also tweeted;

The NWA is saddened to learn about the passing of legendary performer John ‘Blackjack’ Lanza. Our thoughts go to the friends and family of one of the greats.”

If you’ve never seen The Blackjacks in action, then I urge you to head over to YouTube and watch some of their matches. For any budding tag-team wrestlers, The Blackjacks are the perfect study on how to be heels. From working the crowd to cheating to win, Lanza and Mulligan did it better than anyone.

RIP, Blackjack Lanza. The wrestling world will always know your name.
