Saturday, May 15th is a big day for the United Wrestling Network and Memphis ‘rasslin fans. This weekend’s edition of Championship Wrestling from Memphis is dedicated to the Grind City Rumble match, an open invitational, Royal Rumble-type affair that will reward the winner by crowning them as the first Memphis Heritage Champion and therefore the new figurehead of Memphis wrestling. No pressure then, contestants…
Similar to Championship Wrestling from Hollywood’s Red Carpet Rumble, the Grind City Rumble should provide plenty of thrills, spills and surprises. But who will walk away as the first Memphis Heritage champion? Here are my top five predictions.
The inaugural winner of the Cobra Cup, Brett Michaels is also involved in one of the biggest feuds in the promotion, tangling with the dangerous duo of Alan Steel and Johnny Dotson. So it wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to predict Michaels will walk out of the Grind City Rumble as the first Memphis Heritage Champion.
What perhaps goes against Michaels is that, as he has won the Cobra Cup and established himself already as one of the promotion’s leading stars, he might not benefit as much as somebody else from winning the title now. Then again, if you’re Dustin Starr, why wouldn’t you put the belt on your top talent?
Either way, ‘The Gun Show’ is a solid prediction to win on Saturday.
The nemesis of Brett Michaels, what better way to develop and prove ‘The Gun Show’ is a main eventer than having Steel win the belt at the Grind City Rumble and making Michaels chase him for it?
It helps that Alan Steel is a veteran performer, having debuted in 1999 for Power Pro Wrestling and becoming a mainstay throughout the Southern United States. Steel has made a point recently of explaining his violent actions as a reaction to being disrespected as a Memphis legend who just wants the recognition he deserves. What better person to hold the Memphis Heritage Championship then than a Memphis legend such as Steel?
‘Big Swole’ Justin Cole has been an interesting character to watch since CWFM launched. Suffering injured ribs at the hands of ‘The Self-Made Savage’ Mike Anthony, Cole has shown that he has the talent to be a leading star in the promotion. He just needs that first big win.
The end of last week’s Championship Wrestling from Memphis gave a hint that Cole might just make the Grind City Rumble the site for that win. Having answered Norman Meklakov’s over the top rope open challenge, Cole made a point of doing just that, sending the big Russian crashing to the floor.
Could we see the same on Saturday? Time will tell, but I certainly think Cole is a possibility for the win.
Coming back to the big Russian, it’s fair to say that by featuring him in the go-home segment for the Grind City Rumble show, Norman is going to play a big part in the match. The over the top rope challenge made him look strong by eliminating three people before Justin Cole made his appearance. The fact that Cole and Meklakov had such a big exchange suggests in fact that their fight is going to be central to the Rumble.
Could that mean that Meklakov could be in with a chance of winning? I certainly think he has as much chance as Justin Cole, which is why he’s in my top five predictions here.
In all honesty, I’m not sure that Mike will really win the Grind City Rumble. But if I had my way, he would do!
Mean, spiteful and dangerous, Mike Anthony takes no s**t from anyone and spits in the eye of anyone who p****s him off. He’s quickly become one of my favourites to watch on Championship Wrestling from Memphis and I see him very much in the Bad News Allen mould—someone you don’t want to mess with! I’m hoping Mike will give a great showing in the Grind City Rumble and establish himself as one of the big stars of Memphis going forward.
Who do you think will win the Grind City Rumble? Let us know in the comments!
