Staff Predictions: NXT Takeover: In Your House

NXT Takeover: In Your House takes place Sunday night on Peacock and WWE Network

The black and gold standard of WWE will be on full display again on Sunday night with NXT Takeover: In Your House coming to us live from the Capitol Wrestling Center in Orlando, FL. The action kicks off with a pre-show at 7:30pm EST, followed by the main card at 8pm EST. All of the action is available on Peacock in the United States and the WWE Network outside of the states.

The latest installment of NXT Takeover should feature lots of action as we will be treated to a ladder match, a winner-take-all six-man tag and a fatal five-way, along with two impressive match-ups from the best women’s division in wrestling.

As is tradition here at Sports Obsessive, our wrestling staff has come together to take a stab at predicting the outcomes of each match. Do you agree with our picks or have we all lost our minds? Read ahead and find out! Let’s get to it for NXT TakeOver!

Winner-Take-All Six-Man Tag Team Match for NXT North American Championship and NXT Tag Team Championship

Bronson Reed and MSK vs. Legado del Fantasma

Jon: Personally, I would have preferred to split this into two different matches that could have carried themselves. However, I am digging the winner-take-all stipulation that hasn’t been used in quite some time. I definitely can see Legado getting a reign with everybody dripping in gold. I just think it’s too early to yank the belts off of MSK and Bronson Reed just yet. I’m picking the current champs to retain.

Prediction: Bronson Reed and MSK

James: This match has MAJOR implications with it being a winner-take-all match for Reed’s North American Championship and the NXT Tag Team Championship. With that said, I really can’t see Bronson Reed, nor his team taking a loss. Reed is too important right now. Bronson Reed and MSK for the win.

Prediction: Bronson Reed and MSK

Chris: I’ll be very surprised if they take the belts off of MSK and Bronson so early. And as good as Fantasma are, do you really want to see them with all the gold? I suspect a face win here.

Prediction: Bronson Reed and MSK

David: This feud has quickly developed on TV, with newly crowned NXT North American Champion Bronson Reed and Tag Champs MSK joining forces against Legado del Fantasma. Santos Escobar, after dropping the Cruiserweight Title, set his sights on Reed’s title with MSK backing up the champion to help even the odds. There have been very few “winner takes all” style matches in WWE history. The North American Championship was also involved in a similar match last year with then champ Keith Lee beating NXT Champion Adam Cole. NXT has invested a lot in building up Reed and MSK and I don’t see their reigns being cut short here.

Prediction: Bronson Reed and MSK

NXT Women’s Championship

Raquel Gonzalez (c) vs. Ember Moon

Jon: I’m a big fan of both of these women. Both have proven themselves to be worthy champions and legit warriors. My only reservation is that I’m not entirely sold on how well their styles blend together. Regardless, this whole thing will eventually lead to Raquel and Dakota Kai having a Diesel/HBK type showdown, right. Assuming so, Gonzalez retains the NXT Women’s championship in this one.

Prediction: Raquel Gonzalez

James: Match of the night? Most likely. Moon has been on fire as of late and may be on the heels of becoming the new NXT Women’s Championship. At least that is what I would like to see. Realistically though, I feel that Gonzales will retain, especially with this being her first Championship defence at a PPV. I’m going for Gonzales.

Prediction: Raquel Gonzalez

Chris: I predict that if you’re after a night of title changes, this might not be the night for you. While Ember will undoubtedly be competition, that title is not leaving Raquel’s waist anytime soon. Expect Raquel to pick up the win here.

Prediction: Raquel Gonzalez

David: Raquel Gonzalez has made great strides in recent months, beating Io Shirai for the NXT Women’s Title in one of the standout matches at TakeOver: Stand & Deliver. The end game here appears to be an eventual feud with Gonzalez and Dakota Kai. NXT made Ember Moon look strong on this week’s show, but I don’t feel  she poses any real threat to the imposing champion.

Prediction: Raquel Gonzalez

Mercedes Martinez vs. Xia Li

Jon: This contest feels like it could go either way. Xia has been slowly built up to be a well-disciplined machine. Martinez has been looking strong as well since her return from the failure that was Retribution. Both could very well be champions in the not-so-distant future. For now, I’m giving the edge to Xia Li, strictly off of the storyline that has developed around her.

Prediction: Xia Li

James: As dominant as Martinez is, I’m going for Xia Li. Li has been a force of nature in her time with NXT and I believe that she will continue to thrive. Rumour has it that Martinez may be on her way out of NXT to join forces with Eva Marie. Regardless, The future is bright for Xia Li.

Prediction: Xia Li

Chris: This is an interesting match, as it might have women’s title implications moving forward. I think Mercedes will take the win in a hard-fought encounter.

Prediction: Mercedes Martinez

David: I’ll be honest, I haven’t cared for whatever they’re doing with the contingent of Xia Li, Boa, and Mei Ying. However, this should be a decent match as both can go in the ring. After being part of that atrocious Retribution storyline, Martinez has returned to the MMA-style ass kicker gimmick. I’ll just pick with my heart here and go with Martinez.

Prediction: Mercedes Martinez

Ladder Match for Million Dollar Championship

Cameron Grimes vs. LA Knight

Jon: This is another match that I feel could either way. Both competitors are on a trajectory that seems hard to stop. Something tells me that LA Knight will walk away with then Million Dollar Championship, but this feud may be long from over.

Prediction: LA Knight

James: I feel that this entire plot has written around Cameron Grimes. The nod from Ted DiBiase to Grimes has been hugely impactful. I feel that Grimes has the proverbial rocket strapped to his back and will soon have the Million Dollar Championship slapped over his shoulder.

Prediction: Cameron Grimes

Chris: While I think the promotion is definitely hot on Knight, and rightly so, I don’t think he’ll take the win here. Grimes will possibly be aided by Ted Dibease to screw Knight, setting up a rematch at a later date where Knight will get his revenge.

Prediction: Cameron Grimes

David: I have loved the story with Grimes and Knight fighting for the favor of “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase. I heard for years from Bruce Mitchell about how good Grimes is. While Grimes might be great in the ring, he hadn’t connected with a character until he became the “richest man in NXT” after claiming to be an investor in GameStop. However, Grimes ran up against DiBiase while trying to display his wealth. DiBiase has seemingly favored Knight, a newcomer to NXT after a successful run in Impact and the NWA. DiBiase set up the ladder match on this week’s NXT, unveiling the Million Dollar Championship. Very few have held the Million Dollar Championship including, of course, the future “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. I’ve gone back and forth on the outcome of this match and will be voting with my head instead of my heart in picking Knight. Either way, this feud will likely continue after NXT TakeOver.

Prediction: LA Knight

Fatal 5-Way Match for NXT Championship

Karrion Kross (c) vs. Kyle O’Reilly vs. Adam Cole vs. Johnny Gargano vs. Pete Dunne

Jon: Will this be Kross’ swan song before he gets called up to the main roster? If they want an out without having him taking a fall, this would be their opportunity. All of the competitors in this match deserve the title. I’m going against the grain and picking Pete Dunne to capture his first NXT Championship.

Prediction: Pete Dunne

James: What a line up. However, Kross isn’t going to lose. Kross is the Champion and will stay the Champion. This match will be brutal, but in the end this will solidify Kross as the be all and end all of NXT.

Prediction: Karrion Kross

Chris: I don’t see the need for a five-way (why use up four challengers to the title in one match when you can spread them out?) Still, this should be a good match, and I’m particularly intrigued by Kross and Dunne tangling – that should be exciting. But after Kross’ first reign was truncated, I don’t see him losing here at NXT Takeover. Kross for the win.

Prediction: Karrion Kross

David: After his first reign was cut short due to injury, Karrion Kross will face the biggest challenge as NXT Champion in this Fatal 5-Way. Cole and Gargano are both former champions and O’Reilly is surely a future champion. The three of them plus Dunne have been part of some of the best matches in NXT history and this one should be a barnburner. The question is will Kross be able to hang on to this title. I honestly don’t know. If Kross loses the gold this quickly, I feel like as Arn Anderson says on his podcast his “water will be cut off.” A loss would do more damage to Kross here than any of the other competitors. If NXT has already given up on Kross as champion, “Goldie” could definitely go back to Cole, the top act in the company.

Prediction: Karrion Kross
