Does Cody Want The Former Zack Ryder In AEW?

Ever since he was released by the WWE a couple of weeks ago, people have been asking what next for the former Zack Ryder, Matt Cardona. As reported yesterday, it looks as if he’s bringing back the Internet Championship for one, but what fans really want to know is will he end up in AEW?

Matt and Cody are very close, so it was only logical that folks would put two and two together and come up with four, but where does The American Nightmare stand on the subject?

Well, during an Instagram Q&A yesterday, the question of whether his best friend would be getting signed was put to him and this is what he had to say;

…[he] is the best. He’s got over two million followers on Twitter and over a million followers on Instagram. Very broad influence, incredibly famous, more famous than many guys out there. But that doesn’t always translate. The biggest hurdle he’ll face is his friendship with me. He’s one of my only really close friends in wrestling. Maybe my only friend in wrestling. I have my brother, I have my beautiful wife, and they all do the work. This can’t be All Friends Wrestling. You have to handle it the best way. If you put on the Nightmare Family jacket, you’ve got a massive bullseye on your back, just in the locker room alone. It’s a total heat seeker. But I’m looking forward to what he does next. He’ll turn a lot of heads. I think and hope our paths will cross down the road. He’s just entering wrestler prime. Men’s wrestler prime is 35 to 40.”

This is an interesting line that Cody seems to be taking and is, in part I think, a bit of a work.

Everybody knows that AEW isn’t the WWE, especially WWE fans who like to point that out at every opportunity, and one of the major differences between the two companies is the backstage/locker room atmosphere.

WWE might not be the poisonous place that it was 10 years ago, but they still play favorites and there are stories emerging from talent who were released during Black Wednesday that not everything is as peachy as they like to make out.

With AEW, you never hear that.

So for Cody to say that Cardona would have a target on his back and would, essentially, have heat from the boys and girls just doesn’t ring true with me.

If anything, I think this is just laying the foundations for bringing him into the fold, possibly as a member of The Nightmare Family, but more than likely, in my humble opinion, as a character that is resented due to his connection to Rhodes.

Whatever they decide to do, however they decide to play this, I have no doubt that Matt Cardona and AEW will be a working relationship that we see sooner rather than later.
