Championship Wrestling Review – July 4th

This week on CW30’s Memphis edition of Championship Wrestling, things got a little…outlandish, when Zicky Dice entered the Oceanview Pavillion to face Jordan Clearwater, and Vermin made their feud with the Wolf Zaddies that little bit more interesting. Let’s head to the ring with our hosts, the fabulous Dustin and Maria Starr, and find out what went down!

Jordan Clearwater vs. Zicky Dice

OUTLANDISH, BABY! I can’t lie, I love Zicky Dice. His sleazy arrogance puts me in mind of a live child between Billy Gunn and Rick Rude. Indeed, he even uses Rude’s neckbreaker – called the ‘Outlandish Neckbreaker,’ naturally.

His opponent here was the clean-cut Jordan Clearwater, who I like for how he reminds me of the type of babyface you just don’t see anymore. He’s definitely got talent and I was pleased to see him again after last week’s match with Ray Rosas.

Zicky frustrated Clearwater to begin with, using a mixture of superior grappling and pelvic grinding! Clearwater managed to get some hard fists in but Dice regained control, hitting a beautiful release German suplex to do so.

In the end, Zicky went for the ‘Outlandish Neckbreaker’, but Clearwater was able to escape and crack Dice’s jaw with the Midas Touch to win an extremely enjoyable match.

Post-match, David Marquez tried to get a word with Dice, only to find Zicky blaming him for the loss and telling the assembled audience that this was the last they’d see of him. Now that he’s been given his release by the NWA, I hope not. The world needs Zicky – whether they realise it or not!

Match Three of Best of Seven Series: Lacey Ryan vs. Vipress (w/ Halston Boddy)

Lacey Ryan was two losses down in her series with Heather Monroe at this point, so its understandable she needed a big win to start to turn the losing streak around and stay in contention to win the series.

You can imagine Lacey’s frustration, then, when that glittering villain Halston Boddy announced that the third match wouldn’t even be against Heather Monroe – it was against Vipress!

Commentary speculated it was a ruse so that Vipress could injure Lacey and weaken her for the other matches in the series. This doesn’t necessarily make sense when you consider Ryan was already two matches down prior to this, but sure enough, Vipress went for the leg and worked it over for the majority of the match, trying to put Ryan out of action.

Ultimately, though, Lacey’s speed was too much for Vipress and, after a collision with Halston Boddy, who was shouting instructions from the apron, a frog splash was enough to put Vipress away and send a message to Heather Monroe.

The question is: how much will that damage to the leg impact Lacey Ryan when she finally gets Monroe back in the ring?

Porkchop Cash Talks, You Listen!

We then got part two of host Dustin Starr’s chat with Memphis wrestling legend Porkchop Cash. Porkchop is a warm individual who takes obvious delight in recollecting about his past in the business, and it was great to hear him talk about his experiences.

He recollected how his partnership with Dream Machine was so good, they only had to look at each other to know what the other was thinking; how you can’t take anything away from the Rock and Express and how great a team they were; how everything Porkchop achieved in the business he had to fight for; and how he would go out and have the best match of the night if he was first on the card to prove he deserved to be higher up.

I believe there are only three parts to the chat with Porkchop, which is a shame, because he is perhaps a neglected voice in wrestling history. But hopefully he’ll be able to get more exposure from here because I’ve definitely enjoyed what I’ve heard from him so far!

Vermin vs. Wolf Zaddies

Main event time, and Johnny Yuma began by running his mouth on the mic and decreeing that the match was now a Loser Leaves Town match!

Big mistake.

This was a great match with some awesome spots. Bad Dude Tito is a beast and Che Cabrera is no slouch either! Although Vermin dominated to start proceedings, the Zaddies brought the pain to Yuma and Martenson, with Tito slamming Yuma viciously onto Martenson and cracking the pair with some big strikes.

In a crazy moment, Martenson tried to suplex Cabrera over the top rope but Cabrera held onto him, so that both men tumbled to the floor – hard. Tito then took out Martenson with a dive through the ropes, before Martenson picked up Yuma, windmilled his partner around so he could kick the Zaddies in the head, before climbing up the ramp and Death Valley Driver-ing his partner from the ramp down on top of Tito on the floor! A wild, brilliant sequence.

In the end, though, Vermin had bitten off more than they could chew. With Martenson knocked to the floor by a Tito superkick, Yuma was left exposed, and a quick diamond cutter-sit-down powerbomb combo later, and Vermin were having their bags packed!

So, with the thorn of Vermin removed from their side, the Wolf Zaddies are free to look at winning championship gold – so look out Championship Wrestling!
