College Basketball: UK Falls Out Of Top 20

Hey everyone this is Sam and college basketball is in its second week on Sports Obsessive! However, Covid-19 has already hit different college basketball teams and caused cancellations. Plus Kentucky has already ran into problems dropping out of the Top 20 and they are 1-3. Let’s get into it.

Kentucky Off to Worst Start in 20 Years

Poor Big Blue Nation is turning extra blue so bad this season. I know many of you have no sympathy for them and you may have a good reason. On Sunday, Georgia Tech upset the Wildcats by 17 points. UK suffered their third straight loss to unranked opponent. The #1 recruiting class in the Nation had 20 turnovers on Sunday. They are off to the worst start for Kentucky since 2000.

Other College Hoops Teams Updates

Marquette Upsets #4 Wisconsin (67-65)
The battle of the state of Wisconsin was behind on the schedule this year. It ended in dramatic fashion on Friday when Marquette stunned the Wisconsin Badgers with a wild tip-in at the buzzer to win it.

#12 Villanova Defeated #17 Texas (68-64)

This was an excellent game on Saturday as the Big East leaders, Villanova barely held off the Texas Longhorns down the stretch. Coach Shaka Smart kept Texas in a tight game with Villanova and no one led by more than 8 points in the game.

Postponements And Cancelations

Of course, everyone was shocked on Saturday by the postponement of the game between #1 Gonzaga and #2 Baylor. Gonzaga had positives that have caused them to pause all activities and cancelled it’s next four games. Many top-ranked teams had their games cancelled or postponed like #5 Illinois, #6 Duke and #13 Tennessee.

“It’s a fair question to ask, ‘should we be doing this?’ We are going to continue to see these kind of disruptions over and over again,” ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas said. “We felt like we knew this would be a bumpy ride throughout the winter time with programs pausing activity and games being postponed or canceled.”

College basketball has been over ran with cancellations with more than 50 games either cancelled or postponed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The UConn women’s basketball team has yet to play a game.

Men’s AP Top-10

1. Gonzaga (3-0)
2. Baylor (3-0)

6. Illinois (3-1)
7. Houston (4-0)
8. Creighton (3-0)
9. Villanova (4-1)
10. Duke (2-1)

Gonzaga and Baylor held their perches atop the poll even though they had to postpone. However, the door is open for another team to go past them with some big wins since they are on hiatus until December 14th.

College Basketball Poll Risers

The Michigan State Spartans have climbed up four spots to #4. They had a huge win at Duke. Villanova is back in the top 10 after taking down the Texas Longhorns.

College Basketball Poll Fallers

Wisconsin’s last-second loss to Marquette dropped them nine spots to #13. Kentucky has fell all the way out of the rankings with their worst start since 2000.
