College Basketball: It’s Back and It’s Exciting!

Hey everyone this is Sam and can I tell you how happy I am that college basketball is back especially on Sports Obsessive! I love it especially this past couple days since Thanksgiving. College Basketball from noon to midnight is my cup of tea. Plus with no to very little summer and fall workouts then it is coming down to the older more experienced teams.

College Basketball Upset Teams

We found out real fast that upsets are going to happen. Three teams that people named in the Top Ten have suffered losses. Plus for me in this business, there was no shortage of interesting storylines.

San Francisco Upsets #4 Virginia 61-60

Wow! I didn’t see this one coming at all. On opening day UMass-Lowell upset San Francisco and Virginia cruised against Towson, but two days later this is happening. Their game featured seven lead changes in the second half alone showing it was extremely close. Virginia’s Sam Hauser missed the game winning shot at the buzzer. My question is does Virginia stay with their new offense that they put in during the off season or go back to their familiar one they have ran for years?

Virginia Tech Upsets #3 Villanova 81-73 OT

Big battle early in the east. We saw VT and ‘Nova go into overtime before the Hokies pulled away. Virginia Tech’s Keve Aluma was unbelievable with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Richmond Upsets #10 Kentucky 76-64

Most called this a long shot for Richmond to upset Kentucky, but knowing how experienced Richmond was. Then knowing that Coach Calpari’s young team hasn’t had the normal time to practice would have given you a clue. Richmond didn’t let up and came back in the second half. UK shot just 36% from the floor and ZERO% (0-10) from the three point line.

Teams That Showed What We Thought

#1 Gonzaga Defeats #6 Kansas

Gonzaga showed they weren’t afraid of taking it to Kansas. Many thought this could be an upset in the making, but Gonzaga proved too strong. However, their tests aren’t over yet. On Wednesday night, they play #15 WVU and then on Saturday take on #2 Baylor.

The Big Ten

I have to admit The Big Ten surprised me this weekend. They went 26-2 in the first five days of the season. That’s enough to get bettors taking notice. #5 Iowa and #8 Illinois tore it up and had multiple 30+ point blowouts.

College Basketball Top players

Luka Garza

Luka Garza is just about everyone’s preseason favorite for player of the year. Well he certainly looked the part early this weekend. He averaged 33.5 points and 9.5 rebounds for Iowa.

Jason Preston

Ohio State’s Jason Preston almost helped upset #8 Illinois. He had 31 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. All this after almost not playing college basketball until an AAU coach saw him Florida.

Three Teams Enter College Basketball Top-5

Well after talking about those upsets above there had to be movement in the Top 10. So it had to be the Big Ten after coming on so strong. Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois have supplanted those upset teams in the Top-5 (Villanova and Virginia) in the second release of the college basketball AP Poll.

Remember #1 Gonzaga and #2 Baylor have a date on Saturday and one of those will drop down. Expect the Big Ten’s stranglehold at the top to only get stronger.

College Basketball AP Top-10

1. Gonzaga (2-0)
2. Baylor (2-0)
3. Iowa (2-0)
4. Wisconsin (2-0)
5. Illinois (3-0)
6. Duke (1-0)
7. Kansas (1-1)
8. Michigan State (2-0)

So what do you think so far of the season? Excited? Will WVU beat Gonzaga tonight? Let me know in the comments below.
